(I saw that happen to time in a thread for a game that's been waiting for an update for more than 2,5 years what probably made many fall for it).
in the (vast) majority of cases, obviously not Zell, they have accounts on X, Bluesky, Pixiv, Ci-en, Subscribstar... where you can follow their content, After all, if people have been hoping for an update for 2 years without any news from the devs, and suddenly some random person announces a new update, people DL it without searching, and as if by chance “CORONAVIRUS ON YOUR COMPUTER” Bah indeed, I think it's a bit of Karma all the same
That's also the risk of downloading free versions, you'll always have people acting in good faith, and others who abuse it, so it's up to people like us to be vigilant
