This is another great game from doubles*core, and this time around they completely changed the formula from their previous game (Nursery Slime) by changing the focus from a single heroine to 10. It's always great to see a developer that's not afraid of trying new things, when so many just repeat their first success "ad nauseam" ( OneOne1 for instance).
Overall I'd say this was an improvement when compared to the first title, except for one major reservation, that I will mention closer to the end. For now let's focus on the good:
- The heroines - Full disclosure, there's nothing unique here, but most of them have one or more quirks that make them extremely likable or just plain rare. The princess is not showing one bit of skin (with good reason), the pixie acts like a proper prankster(mythologically accurate?), the mimic is a CLOSET pervert... and so on. The fact that you get 10 heroines does mean that the quality varies, but you are bound to like one or more of them (All heroines get their own ending).
- The H-scenes - This is the area that shines the most in my opinion. Quite a few of these have a twist or some purposeful (light to medium) shock value. It's refreshing because your brain is working on auto-mode through the same old, and then a surprising event gets your attention, making a great lasting impression ( The pixie/fairy heroine is a winning concept, and yes I have played Black Souls)
- The lore and the world - This one takes a long time to be revealed, but everything is connected and properly (not thoroughly) explained (the only outlier is the basilisk heroine). I can't say this is a strong positive in itself, but it does become one when establishing comparisons to the competition. Some thought was given when creating this world, and some time was spent making sure the story adds up on all fronts. Can't ask for more in this genre
- The gameplay elements have some depth to them - Strange as it may sound, you can actually strategize when it comes to combat and fighting development. Words like healer, fighter, mage, support, tank or mixed, do apply here. It's not CRPG deep, but it's enough for people who can appreciate a challenge.
I'd like to keep praising game, but let's move to the negative stuff.
- There's no sense of direction or purpose - Your "girlfriend" dumps you, you move to a an unexplored continent, and "monster girls" enter your life. That's it, you are just completing quests in different areas, and the thread that binds everything (Harpy route) makes its appearance only in the late game.
Something that compounds this effect, is the number of things that you can do at any given moment: You could do a quest, visit a new zone, craft gear, watch a heroine scene, give a present, farm mobs and materials, work on your build, discover rare monsters etc.. Basically, you can do anything except follow a main quest. It's probably too much freedom, and I preferred the more "targeted approach" of Nursery Slime. This negative could work well for some people, that's something to keep in mind.
This one is a 9/10 and if were talking about "bang for your buck", it will be difficult to find something better than this in the genre. Great game, highly recommended.
