okay i just started playing this, ive never played starbound so i have absolutely no idea what im supposed to be doing, i saw the tutorial and all i can do is pick up boxes and throw them, i dont know how im supposed to work this game, I'd appreciate it if someone could give a better tutorial than the in-game one, otherwise im just going to consider dropping this game.

But I doubt that original starbound have anything to do with what you need to do in this game
Starbound is basically a Terraria but in space. You travel between planets, gather resources, update your ship and equipment, build stuff, visit NPC's and races on different planets/stations.
With a quest line telling you the plot about eldritch tentacle planet that was locked up by people in the past, coming back and eating other planets (including earth)
Long story short, it's kinda mid
It had a GREAT potential, but devs in their huge wisdom decided to underdeliver in nearly EVERY SINGLE aspect of the game. Half-empty planets and moons. Ships and stations having only few variations. Mechanics being used half way.
You can see and feel that they could do way more. But they didn't
In the end - it's the game that carried by mods and fans
