I was wondering if there are any games with a good, fleshed out male main character. Something a little better than a the usual self-insert, so to speak. What would you recommend?

Maybe TLS. I actually dislike the MC for the choices he makes early in the game (didn't play very long because of that) but the writing is good and clearly the writer cares about making the MC stand out for an adult game. No, not the first one who dies like 20 minutes in.

The one in Princess Tower, I thought was well-written. As a nihilistic, sociopathic maledom.

Your edgelord power fantasy self-inserts are still self-inserts. Not that dominant and/or malevolant characters can't be well written, but I think you missed the point. If the character just so happens to be "literally me" in that he appeals to your particular kinks.... it's a self insert.

I think that the lack of "good" MCs is partially due to amateur writing, but also by design. In the vast majority of cases, the stories are meant to be experienced in the first person, rather than observed from the third person.

If you make the MC too unique and personified, then you start to alienate people more and more. The more and more the MC becomes a "real" person, the less readers can see themselves in him, or self-insert into the story. I think the point of the porn VN genre for most guys is to self-insert. If you wanted to watch somebody else fuck someone, there's a million other places one can do that - where VNs are pretty unique in offering an experience where the reader has agency over the story, and can put themselves into the fantasy instead of just observing it.

It's a good idea to put "male" in the title. ;)

Dunno if you more prefer in fleshed out in being a large presence in the story or fleshed out in personality and emotions.

Tune in to the Show, ironically with mostly POV renders and sort of a self-insert theme at first but with a lot of emotional hinterland for the MC

Teaching Feeling
Love of Magic (mostly; there are a couple of events the MC goes through that aren't his fault but he feels guilty about)
House in the Rift

Some games give you the option to be good as opposed to expecting the MC to be good. The following are entirely playable a fun while acting ethically.
Superpowered -- so long as you play good, the MC is good. It is hard to remain good though.
Love, Sex and Second Base.
Tabletop Bornstar
The Roommate
Wife Trainer

I would object on that. In order for a story to be involving, you don't need to identify directly with a character, you just need to empathise, to feel his/her emotions as if they were yours. Same goes for the shagging.

I think BaDik's MC is rather fleshed out. Or maybe his character just got built up as the story went...but still. It's clearly a game that tries to go beyond the adult nature of the game. AoA's MC was as well. I enjoyed the opening where it showed the relationship between him and his dad, and ultimately the attempts his father made to get him into the school because he knew he was dying.

Other stories? Hmm...

Something to Write About: The Author & the newest game STWA: Unbroken I think have some pretty good stories that flesh out the MC and the kind of person they are.

One Day at a Time is definitely up there as a fleshed out MC dealing with their addiction to drugs, and the crazy world around him. I know that might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the author really gives you an in-depth glimpse into that world, and characters that could be in it.

+1 to Defending Lydia Collier.

I wish more male MC games would explore the concept of relatable characters, instead of well, that sort of dick transport vehicle meant for players to drive.

Like just make characters that are their own thing, in a story meant for them and make us participant allowing to choose some aspects of the character life.

The MC from Aurelia comes to mind. He's not 'fleshed out' per se but the dialogue is really good and they're not a self-insert. They arent wimpy or a massive creep either, which I really like.
