Games with confusing ratings

What are some games you think have ratings that make no sense? Either super padded or sandbagged. There are some crowds that instantly 5 star a game because they love one tag and the opposite can also be true.

I think of a game like lisa which I couldnt give more than a 2 but has like 4.5 overall.

All of them ?

Rating is expected to be an unbiased opinion, but really few try to achieve this. Too often people will give 5 stars because they had an erection, or 1 star because they hadn't one.

I mean, fair enough, I agree there are a ton of games I've tried out because glowing 5 star wall and hated but didn't instantly give a 1 star. I haven't played every game obv and wanted to see if there were any particularly egregious examples of padded or sandbagged ratings

Not padded or anything AFAICT, but I don't get the high rating of Ataegina. It seemed like something I would be interested in, but I played a fair amount and :WaitWhat:.

My new memories for sure. Half the characters look extemely underage (and act like that) which is prob why its so high, but fuck me that is one of the most pretentious games I have ever seen. Overly descriptive, boring, perfect MC, takes itself way to serious, etc.

Would it be useful to introduce something like a user and critic rating?

To become a critic you have to be an active member and write enough useful/popular reviews for games.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I could see that going either well or reeeeeeally badly. I think it may be easier to just have like, show all and it shows all reviews and then maybe a "substantive" filter where it's gotta be more than barely over minimum characters. But that is an interesting idea.

The main issue I have with it is sort of, you can have a game with super staunch defenders that upvote tf out of a glowing review or a minimum effort review leading to the padding. The opposite might also be true? But I've seen some 5 stars given out without really any substance strictly to try and "balance" the negative reviews even on games with already padded ratings.

yeah that's a game I skipped cause tags, I think I played the first couple updates but just fell flat with me.

Jeeezus lmao two of the reviews are literally a mirror of each other, using the same words and everything

I believe I read somewhere that the admins plan to overhaul the review system eventually.

Most reviews are really bad. Both good and bad ones. I review games every so often, and I try to be objective. Even in games I dislike, I try to point out the positive parts. And if I like the game, I still point out things that aren't so great.

One thing I've found is reviews are pretty much useless when it comes to new games. Tons of 4.5/5 star ratings are based solely on potential. Not the game as is.

yeah I usually don't review first releases but sometimes it's like...alright something has to be said about the state of this. It would be nice for some sort of grace period, but some devs are much faster in workflow than others and what one might get done in 6mo-1yr might take another way longer or shorts.

I've noticed sometimes that rule 6 of reviews can be unevenly applied and that sometimes leads to some super padded scores. Then you look at a game like alternative existence which has a pretty lackluster score and doesn't even have controversial tags or anything and still manages to have such disparate reviews, though personally I'd rate it higher

Theres a lot of 0-3 message accounts giving 5/5 reviews for some daz 3d VN that looks a lot like thousand other games on the platform.
Why would there be an account just to give perfect score review to a game? Why would there be dozens and dozens?
When thats the norm you have stop caring about reviews at all.

Because most users from this website are lurkers.

For fake reviews what you should actually consider are accounts that were created near the review date, those tend to be the fake ones. Always report those so mods check if they are suspicious.

For reviews, I just look at the bad ones and see the quality of those critics.

If they make sense and are well articulated, and what they complain about is something that bother me, I pass.

5 stars reviews are often useless...

1 star reviews? 99% absolute garbage to shit on a game.
5 star reviews? 99% garbage because many people throw them out for no reason. Hell they even give 5 stars when they have more cons than pro's in their review.

So either read the ones that have 2-4 stars or limit yourself to read reviews when you're taking a shit.

Most early builds with 5 star ratings. A lot of people will just slap a high rating on first or second releases in the hopes that encouraging the dev will keep them motivated. Not only does this never work, but it completely skews the ratings on bad games when later builds do prove to be trash. 2 years later you wind up with a 4 star average but only about 20 pages in the thread because nobody is playing the game.

Having the numerical star rating at all is a bad decision imo. There are too many different sets of expectations that people can come into a porn game with to make any kind of standardization of objective quality. Having reviews is fine, but trying to boil them down to a number with no attached scale or rubric for what that number means is an over simplification that makes it largely useless.

I've noticed largely the same thing, 5 star rating but the reasoning is I liked it and typing a bunch of nonsense to hit minimum characters. I usually do the same thing and just read the well thought out negative and middling reviews, not to say there aren't substantive 5 star review but they are few and far between.

Yeah for sure, lots of people throw out "balancing" scores, I liked it but the guy below me only gave it 2 so even though there was a ton of stuff i didnt like ill give it 5.

OMG yes, this is kind of why I started the thread. lot of games ive tried cause glowing reviews, get done and im like "wtf did they see in this" and you go to the early reviews and it turns out it was potential.

It would be interesting to see keeping the numerical but adding more categories to change weighting or if there was some sort of template to review by or as I mentioned earlier seperate ratings, one on aggregate and a weighted average based only on substantive reviews that are more that actually explain their reasoning.

Not everyone is capable of being a reviewer, but everyone has the freedom to share their opinion on a particular game.
This means that despite a bunch of rules regarding reviews (Which are for the most part followed), you cannot expect an accurate and professional review but something akin to asking a random person "Hey, what do you think about this game?" while deciding whether to download or not.

Agree.
Overall I think Steam's system for rating is better, where it takes into account "recent reviews" and separates them from older one. This is especially useful in cases where the game is early access or still in development.
Because most people have different scales for different aspects of the game, the numeric score doesn't really represents well the score of the game compared to a binary decision of recommendation or not.
