I think so! It's probably the most hentaiy of hentai fetishes. It's a staple of the genre and I think most people either love it, like it, or don't find it offensive and will still fap to it.
Well it makes sense. I can ignore the tag to some extend even though it is a turn off for me. So i see how you could put it in without chacing people away and at the same time lure people in (pon intended).

As a new dev working on my first VN I've found this thread interesting but not from the point of what everyone likes / dislikes but for getting a better understanding of different people's understanding of the genres.

For example I'm working on what I would define as a kinetic visual novel having read the tag descriptions on this site but I plan for the more extreme fetishes to be optional via dialogue choices between the characters. So the reader decides what they want to see but there is no impact on the eventual story. So by definition is this still a kinetic novel or not?

Also, I have a urination scene but it will be optional so lets say i get to the point where I can upload my VN, I add a tag for urination but elsewhere (I think it's dev notes) I highlight it's optional, do I then risk people who just read the tag section not reading the VN because it mentions a fetish they don't like without realising it's optional? I guess I can mention this in the tag section, just from reading the posting guide wasn't sure if that's acceptable though, guess I'll find out.

Another couple that I've seen a lot of people against is corruption and sleep sex both of which I have planned at the moment. My feeling though that the extemeniss (is that a word?) of these can vary greatly, corruption could be getting someone to try something new to which they consent or it could be tie them up and subject them to all sorts, the same with sleep sex, if it's waking someone up during and they went to bed as consenting, that is a mild form of sleep sex isn't it? But someone just seeing that tag might be turned off straight away.

I think my struggle with all these tags is that trying to expand on what they mean in the context of the story risks giving away more of the story before it's being read. Not sure what the answer is but I have learnt some things from this thread thanks.

I'm so tired of the argument about tags like ntr. I too hate it with all my heart, and I would never play a game that can't make me skip it. With that being said, the argument will never end because the people arguing are never truly responding so it just a repetition over and over again. Those against it are annoyed that a game with an interesting story/universe has ntr in it, often very unclear if it's optional, not optional, voluntary or rape. The ones liking ntr respond with saying that they should just not play it and leave instead of complaining. These arguments will never cancel each other and will only continue.

To answer the question:

Ntr, scat/water play(including whatever other gross tags exists.), female protagonist, female domination, furry, gay, trans.

Special mention to the type of game where the protagonist is some sort of hero destined to save everyone or something, gathering a party/following of girls to aid him (and have sex with) only to end up the least notable and special out of all of them. I can't stand that type of game, the dev has a really cool concept, but the mc is either just so far under his party when it comes to anything, or just not notable, having crude weapons when the people around him have mind blowing powers that he can never hope to match, yet even though the mc is that unnoteworthy he is still the ''leader'' and everyone wants to sleep with him. This type of game is usually built and advertised like a power fantasy, yet you are nothing compared to everyone else, but you still manage to win somehow. Usually there is some sort of training/build up to reach your true strength, but that is more often than not inadequate to make you better/cooler than your followers/enemies. I find it incredibly irritating to start a game claiming that you will be this great hero when you really are neither great nor a hero. It's possible to make amazing side characters, but if you don't have or know anything special that actually makes you someone worth following it will gets irritating quite fast.

Are there really so many people wanting tentacles, so developers are just supplying demands, maybe even including there own demand for it?
Tentacles were more popular in the early internet days, when people had far less exposure to hentai (and anime in general, outside of niche nerd events like anime conventions). I think it blew a lot of people's minds, and became the go-to example of how weird Japanese porn can get. At the time the prevailing attitude in in the US was "Cartoons are just for kids", so vanilla porn cartoons were unheard of, and tentacle porn cartoons would make heads explode. Knowing about tentacle hentai meant you were more of an elite anime nerd than those casual Sailor Moon and DBZ fans.

After a while, hentai artists ran out of ideas for new ways to use tentacles, so they lost a lot of their novelty, and other hentai trends took its place. That's my casual read on it, anyway. I'm sure there's a bigger nerd out there with exact dates and numbers for a timeline of popular hentai trends.

It is nice to get some info on the subject since it have been bugging me for awhile, cause lately i have been running in to a lot of tentacle tags lately mainly from other sites though.
Some of them where older games, but i am not sure about the age of all them.

Not wrong i remember that back in the 90s from having even the old La Blue Girl VHS...(memories) you can still do things with tentacles but now a days like a lot of genres. Just have to see what idea you can do with it.

Any "wholesomeness" to be found in smut games distributed on this site is fake and almost without exception completely unrealistic. Also, harem is not wholesome, it is a fetish that women would generally find completely demeaning.

To answer the OP, my most disliked genres off the top of my head are:
- Futa (I repeat what I ask elsewhere: who is futa made to appeal to? aliens? certainly not straight/gay/male/female humans)
- Sissy (not healthy)
- Gay (no comment)
- Any game featuring "humor" which breaks the fourth wall and is basically just an excuse for lazy writing
- Any game featuring tons of non-meaningful "dialogue" that doesn't drive any plot forward

As for my most enjoyed genre that would be quality NTR, though there are plenty of dogshit ones. You won't get the level of psychological investment from any game as you do from a well written NTR game, IMHO. You just have to not be an insecure bitch about it, and not identify too much with the protagonist.
Funny thing is Futa does appeal to straight guys and female but guys the most. Why it gives the excuses i think to not see the male at all. And this is from something that do enjoy futa, but i think that is one of the main reason why. But might be other things.

NTR, Scat, Bestiality, Gays (Lesbi is okay, lol), Furries, Insects, Guro.
I played Euphoria, and it's kinda broke me inside. (Devil Route trauma). VN itself was kinda good.

About guro, well, I kinda like shock and gruesome content once in the while only if it's a some dark sci-fi, because of my favorite films like "Aliens", "Resident Evil" first film in series, which was the most immersive one, and games like "Dead Space". But if it's a just meaningless gruesome torture - no, it's a total turn-off for me.

NTR for me kinda guilty pleasure but in rare cases, most of the time it's also total turn-off for me. I'm losing my faith in humanity and girls from this :HideThePain:
Gays and Furries - just not my interests.
Scat, Insects, Bestiality - Yack!

Tentacle porn was only really a thing because of Japanese censorship laws in the first place. They found a way to show a pecker shaped thing going into a gal without having to overly blur it.

It wasn't just porn cartoons that messed with kids when parents didn't know cartoons weren't just for kids. Watership Down traumatized me when my parents plunked me down in front of it in the late 70s.

It still surprises me that cartoon ever got made. Growing up I liked the book itself but parents really didnt understand what that movie was about. They just saw it was animated and gave it to kids.
It was fairly experimental I believe. That damn cartoon landed like a brick in kids minds everywhere.

For me, it was The Adventures of Mark Twain, by the studio that eventually made Coraline. I wouldn't say traumatizing, but re-watching it as an adult, there were scenes and themes that made me think "it's weird this was supposed to be for kids" (it wasn't, but no one would ever know that without researching). I still watched the hell out of that movie on VHS.
