I wonder how many of the people that complain about the dev trying to make money from his efforts actually go to work for free themselves?

imo achievment stuff for patrons is smart, that way patrons won't feel cheated and "pirates" can play the game. He's not fighting piracy.. he's looking for a way to make it worth being a patron, if you can get a free version then what's the incentive to pay to DS?
You find his work worthwhile and want to see more of it? You know the reason Patreon exists?

Btw am I the only person who thinks that an always online DRM is just a disaster waiting to happen. Like someone gets the idea to be an asshole and suddenly paying customers can't log in because the log in servers are getting DDoSed or some shit.

I mean, the guy hasn't even released a first version, he doesn't even know if this is going to work the way he wants or if it's going to be buggy or not, neither does he know if his patrons are going to follow him down this road with this project or not and already he is thinking about stuff like piracy and DRM. This shows what kind of priorities he got.

If he released a 0.1 game free for all as a demo version, (patrons chose to support him and his work instead of paying a monthly subscribing fee to play this - this isn't WOW guys) he would get a lot more attention and feedback and attract a lot more potential patrons, but no.

That's a lie from people who don't want to pay for content.
Damn. And here I thought I paid for all 700+ games I own, ~1500 music CDs and ~300 movies on Blu-Ray. Must've gotten them for free. After all, I do pirate stuff (admittedly, 99% of the times I'll pirate it because I want a demo, or my paycheck is a bit too far away, so I buy a legit copy later).

When I said that actual research was done I wasn't kidding. This is the latest one. . Feel free to read it, it's a complete paper.
To me, DS's move will bring him more patrons.
The last time he did it he lost Patrons.

Wasn't this issue (DRM) discussed to death and beyond for dozens of pages when it was introduced in BB? With pretty much the same arguments from both sides?

Some people think it's his right to do so.
Some think he'll shoot himself in the foot for it.
Some think he should spend more time making content instead of devising DRMs (if for some weird reason those were inter-connected).
Some people think DS is an asshat because it's the cool thing to do.
Some people think [insert whatever opinion here].

All those opinions are fine (all with valid and not-so-valid arguments), and they are all based on assumptions so far.

BUT, last time I checked, butting heads endlessly in here (something of which I'm guilty myself) did not cause DS to change his mind in the slightest. I don't see any reason it should happen now. What (allegedly) changed his mind, is having his game cracked anyway, so I guess we'll just wait and see.

Unless this is all a theoretical discussion on principles and ethics.

I am not arguing opinions, principles or ethics, I am arguing pure facts. Piracy has no visible negative effects on digitally distributed products, period. To people who deal with digitally distributed products and the whole market, this is about as undeniable as evolution is to biologists, or usefulness of vaccines to doctors. Sure, you'll always find one who says otherwise, but they're all pretty much bought and paid for (like the guy who faked a study to prove that vaccines cause autism).

Noone has ever been able to prove that not being able to pirate something generates sales, and noone has ever been able to prove that piracy reduces sales. And trust me, many have tried.

In extreme cases piracy IS the business model. Why do you think Windows anti-piracy measures are so pathetic? Because that way everyone familiarizes themselves with this system by using it at home, and then when they go to work, their employer has to buy them Windows (except IT/engineering crowd), because it's cheaper and more efficient than retraining your employees. But that is an extreme example which doesn't work in gaming industry.

Also, by time-gated he means that the free version will be 1-2 months behind the
Patreon version and I think he also said $5 dollar backers will be a couple of weeks behind the higher tier backers.

I‘m wondering. DS pledger grows continuously rising. For what?
Historical data indicate a very sharp decline. He lost 25% of his followers in the last couple of months, presumably due to the discontinuation of BB and or a retaliation to Patreon policy changes (or both). Though might some be coming back.

As to why that happens? My assumptions are either:
1. People actually enjoy his games and want to support him,
2. Despite some people heavily protest DRM usage, they might be willing to sub to him if there is not a viable free alternative (though a bit unlikely in my books currently).

But it makes no sense to pledge for a unreleased game!? For me, I’ll waiting for 0.1. After that i‘ll decide if or if not pledge.

Well, there are also many pledges that are sort of "forgotten" (for lack of a better word), especially from people who pledge to numerous creators.
You kind of have your pledge running month to month and it just stays there, especially if said pledge is trivial compared to your total sum. That's an occurrence on many creators' accounts, and way more evident to some of those creators.

Other cases might involve just lowering your pledge amount instead of unpledging completely. Someone might've pledged for, say, 10$ when BB was still active but dropped it to 1$ just to get the news. He's still listed in the total pledgers amount, but the payout is surely changed.

Without getting into the pirate/customer debate, patreon is not a plateform that allow you to buy a game , or rather a licence of exploitation. It's not even a supporting platform in the financial sense since the best that you can get from your money are goodies and early access, you do not invest in patreon , you do not get right in exchange for your money on the product or if it is ever sold a share of the benefice.
No patreon is charity or a Tip Jar. What you pledge gives you nothing legally , it's a model that only survive on the "goodwill" of "supporter" and it clearly open to a lot , lot of abuse .

The release will be today then?
On the 16th he said
While 0.1 isn't as ready as we'd like it to be, it's already mid March. We can always keep working on improving code and graphics, but we're going to keep our word and 0.1 is going to be released in a couple of days. Also, we're not going to push back planned content to 0.2 and instead we'll update 0.1 Soon™.

So I guess it's today or tomorrow...

Finishing touches

Automatic updates took us a bit longer than we anticipated, but it finally works! We're going to include images in 0.1 build so you won't overload our servers by downloading them from us, but in the future we'll have a dedicated server so the client can download the images from it if you want to.
Currently we're focusing on our game's engine, we want to finish it up first so we can move on to adding content without distractions.

While the programmer was working on automating updates, I created a couple locations, I'll start showing them to you after 0.1 is done.

We will definitely release 0.1 tomorrow. It might have bugs and is missing some content, which we will fix in the near future, you won't have to wait for 0.2.

TL;DR 0.1 release tomorrow.
