Having just had to replay most of Big Brother, in order to write the parody I work on, I realized a fatal flaw in his game design that I hadn't noticed the first time, when it was one of few games I'd ever played. Dark Silver's art, the one redeeming factor that many point to, is lazy. His poses and camera angles often block anything sexy, and his sex scenes rarely have more than 10 renders. Compare that to each release of our parody, in which the short stories have a small amount of buildup and then sex for long enough to justify a release, and you get on the low end 30 renders of just sex, but on average 50 renders, yeah, he's lazy.
Combine this with what I've heard from fellow developers who decided to play it even with the constant DRM, and yes, he's genuinely half assing the art, using single frames for entire conversations. What bugs me the most about this is the amount of money he's making, while being so lazy with it. We have a team, making almost no money, but still one artist. I write the scripts, we have a coder to handle the execution, but the art is still on one person's shoulders. I can say, that while writing takes time, most of that time is spent just going over how best to do things in your mind before really commuting it to paper. Code takes time if you've got something complicated, but the way I hear Rich tell it, he's got his framework down so tight that he mostly just has to plug my dialogues and FF's images into his framework and viola. The art is the thing that takes time, and it's the thing that DS is skimping out on.
