I just managed to bypass it by downloading the 0.35 bro tier that still has a live link earlier in the thread. Had a save on the map right outside Veronica's house, and it progressed when I went in on that game, then just hopped back to 0.39.

There was a post suggesting 0.36, but those links were dead, luckily one of the 0.35 links was still there and worked.
