Halfway House
Review, as of Ep. 5:
Pros
• Relatively down to earth, somewhat novel scenario with a cast of characters with unusual histories.
• Gorgeous, realistically proportioned heroines. I usually prefer a more exaggerated body type, but there's something about Samantha that has made her one of my favorite MILF-type characters in recent memory.
• Multiple male characters that are actually likable, which can be a rare thing in porn games. Luis and Officer Monroe, while over the top personality wise, remain endearing. What little we've seen of Eli has also been good.
• Care has been put into the visual presentation, making good use of pauses and different types of transitions.
• Things seem to be escalating nicely between characters, porn wise. The scene with Samantha at the end of chapter 4 really tickled my inner Louis CK.
Neutral
• The player character doesn't quite read like someone who's been institutionalized for four years.
• The player character's endless stream of consciousness borders between charming at times and annoying at others. I won't qualify this as a negative, since it adds some dimension to his character and it's never too annoying.
• If you don't like Emily, you might feel railroaded into the player character's interest in her. I don't really take fault with that, as story has to happen, and Emily and the player character seem to have a strong thematic reason for that interest - both of them dealing with anger problems.
• The writing feels like a quintessential porn game in some respects with how quick the characters warm up to the MC, but hey, it IS a porn game.
Cons
• There's no audio (music or sound effects) to speak of, which undercuts the otherwise sharp presentation of the game.
• The writing lacks in the subtlety department. Characters are often pretty blatant with their motivations.
Overall, despite the occasional fault and nitpick, this has become one of my favorite games in development largely due to how beautiful a character Samantha is, but also owed to the game's overall vibrant cast of characters. There's a lot of potential depth to Ashley due to her personal history and I'm interested seeing how that'll tie into both her development and when it comes to romancing Emily.
