Just saw the teaser on the discord.
Mind sharing the thoughts behind the shift from Ren'py to Unity? I'm gussint that it'll increase the dev time as well, when a lot of the coding already done was with ren'py in mind?

I'd say there might be a bigger reason to worry...
We use Renpy to make our game. Renpy is an excellent game engine for visual novels. As Hazelnut Latte has grown, it has become more than just the short 7k-word visual novel it started out as. It has branching paths, an interactable environment, a map to travel, a phone to use, a laptop with games, and so much more that we want to do.
Unity allows us to make things easier and better. It is an engine built for implementing minigames, menus, and weird systems, including a visual novel. It is much easier for a versatile game engine to include a visual novel element than for a rigid visual novel engine to include other elements."
"I need to turn a screw, but why would I use a screwdriver when I could use a swiss army knife instead?".
Now, I have zero experience in coding in Unity, but judging purely by other VNs on this engine, while being much better suited for stuff like minigames/sandbox (as mentioned above), they always tend to be very clunky (and much buggier, especially when a bunch of stuff is being added on the fly). And from the way it sounds, it seems like all these minigames/phone/wierd systems are gonna play bigger part in gameplay. Which is perfectly fine by itself (assuming that these systems are actually gonna benefit the gameplay/stay fresh even after constant usage), except for the fact that it's basically trading off a comfortable VN experience for a broader, "jack of all trades, master of none" type of gameplay (still in a mainly VN game).
In my opinion, the better solution in a long run would've been to take what you can from what little you have and be creative with it - in other words, go with RenPy, drop the unfit stuff (sandbox/minigames) and instead deal with "economic" part of the story through the series of trade-off choices.
But that's just my opinion posted on a pirate forum, so whatever.

It's a bad new, this kind of games isn't suited for an engine like Unity that need more resources and time for less performances and interoperability. I'll probably have to stop playing the game, as for Inn Another World.

You could've stopped there.
Not sure what you think you're contributing to the discourse by wildly guessing into the aether about the implications about using Unity for a visual novel. There are already . They work great. Any clunkyness you are complaining about is down to developers, not the engine itself.

We're continuing the story with Ren'Py while making the transfer to Unity at the same time.

We want to implement specific mechanics, such as mini-games, free roam, cafe ranks, and more, in an engine better suited for these types of features.

Hazelnut Latte isn't just a Visual Novel anymore, so we need an engine that can handle that.

I hired another programmer to facilitate the switch.

Appreciate the information.

The change away from visual novel is an interesting step, hope you get what you're aiming for with Unity switch.

Not trying to sound rude, but will this change delay the update by any chance?

Backer version has access to the walkthrough, tells you what your choices might lead to.
