Since the update isn't out on itch.io yet and I'm still contemplating whether I want to grab it ASAP or wait for the next one so that I can play the "full" beach story in one go, I've been stuck thinking about how the endings will work now all morning and just feel like idly theorizing a bit.
Trying to puzzle things out from the bits and pieces of information:
- Happy Ending — I always assumed this was going to be very Rose-focused, because it's supposed to be the most "vanilla" romantic path and having that end on a harem would've been... surprising, to say the least. And unlike the NTR ending, I don't recall ever seeing any mention of it potentially having its own mini-branch, like where you could get the normal "marry Rose" ending or the "everyone falls in love with Leto" golden ending on top of that.
- NTR Ending — Exactly what you'd expect from the name, and we know it's supposed to have two versions; one where the villains keep the girls for themselves, and another where they get shared around... but we have no idea how what the context could be to choose between those. I mean, obviously, that would be massive spoilers.
- Revenge Ending — The biggest question mark in my head right now, because I felt like this was almost certainly going to be the one that involved the harem by process of elimination, and now that it is off the table, it's just a total blank slate in my brain and I have no clue what to expect.
Just looking at them, it makes me think that the obvious choice would be to condense things back down to three endings by merging the "whore NTR" ending into the Revenge ending. Have him just become as cruel and cold as we saw in the king's flashback (if not even more so), where he marries Rose and takes the throne... but only does it out of necessity (his duty to protect the kingdom and more personally, a pathological need for control after being inevitably betrayed by his closest loved ones), with no room in his heart to actually forgive her or the other three for hurting him so deeply. By necessity, if Cyanna and Haylen can't have any interaction with Leto... That puts the Revenge ending in a bad spot for them having any content, since it would
need to be with other characters and the villains probably aren't going to be around in that ending.

But then on a separate train of thought, I'm also wondering how it would work to handle the choice on which NTR ending you get with the current plan. With how the ending is determined so far by tallying up your dialogue choices, it would need to be a binary choice once you're locked into the NTR path. But having the player pick an option which does nothing other than arbitrarily determine if the villains are open to sharing or not would be more than a little abrupt.
Especially for a character like Ulrod, where the brothel quest made it pretty damn explicit that he would
not be open that.
And that makes me wonder if the "whore NTR" ending would actually make
more sense as a variant of the Happy ending instead, where Leto thwarts the conspiracy either way, but is given an obvious (to the player) choice between doing it the right way, which leads to the Happy ending... or some foolish and naïve way, which gives you the Bad/"Hollow" ending version instead, where the villains are defeated, but Leto's life still slowly falls apart even in their absence because picking that foolish option is a confirmation that Leto (in this ending) hasn't actually changed or learned anything throughout the story. In a thematic sense, the Bad ending is a punishment for his stagnation while the Happy ending is a reward for his growth.
