I agree with you, one of the things DB does very well is showing how close the family is.
And it makes sense sheltering Emma from a character perspective, especially after we figure out that at one point some of Charlottes friends took some salacious pictures of Emma while she was a child, it makes sense that charlotte wouldn't trust many people with Emma after that

Strict? Joshy, she sits her adult daughter on her laps, holds her like a baby and talks to her like a baby. Do you really think this does anything good to Em? Being affectionate is one thing, but treating her like a child is quite another. It is not surprising that the girl barely manages to survive in college and communicate with her classmates. How she supposed to grow up, build a career and relationships if she doesn't have the experiences that other kids had in high school and college?
The funny thing is that Suzy lives the normal life of a young student, and it doesn't seem like Charlotte much afraid about her (well, except for her temper and destructive behavior).
