That said, I would have liked a choice there as well.
I have to tell the truth, and I can't say I like the direction this game has taken so far. It feels like most of the drama is put there just for the sake of it and I can't put the "already seen elsewhere" feeling away. Also, let's not forget this should be a porn game in the first place. I'm very close to dropping it for good. Very disappointing.

I am quite surprised about all criticism about MC decision. I am very very rarely the one for violence but I can totally understand his reaction if someone he deeply deeply cares about is/can be in near future endangered.

This is one of the few games with an interesting enough story that my brain doesn't go right to the "milking" argument. For the most part the game has been consistent thus far. I always ask myself if adult games can be more than smut - that there can be deep stories with some adult content. I have no problem with the MC's decision to kill Carter. Primarily for the reason you point out and the fact that Carter's a cop and we have solid evidence that "justice" in Hillside is often pretty random for those who are connected. I'd be very reluctant to trust the "system" to put Carter away even with Zak's blood on his hands.

MC has the FBI contact, the knife has the Detective's prints, and it can be traced to him killing Zak and 2 witnesses corroborating that he was going to kill Emma he'll be fine.
Good cliffhanger though, and its totally justified that MC killed that scumbag to give a measure of peace for Emma and Charlotte

My take on it was that Carter intended to kill both Zak and Emma initially (framing on David from college i guess), then MC and Charlotte when they showed up later. But because of the phone tracking, raging MC arrives good quick as Carter is grabbing Emma.
The MC promises to shoot Carter if he hurts Emma - which is essentially an agreement that instead they have a movie style melee boss showdown (where Carter has the advantage with the knife (or so he thinks)) - so Carter releases Emma as he can still kill Charlotte and her at leisure after he kills the MC. Only a snapped neck ruined that possibility.
To back this up we can see that Carter appeared confident he could defeat the MC, reacting with overconfidence after landing a slash with the knife, taunting the MC ("How's your arm? Does it hurt?!"). This is soon follow by his ass kicking and various surprise exclamations (Huh? What the fuck? Whoah! Noo!)
The increasing levels of sex are due to the current porn industry's "plot development" in a vast majority of their vids.
