This is a fantasy VN, which usually means several things: generic fantasy races, a meaningless plot, and characters so thinly written you can see daylight through them.
Homelander manages to avoid all these pitfalls.
There is, frankly, an absurd amount of lore already built into a game that's only on version 0.2b. The plot has obviously been carefully considered already; we aren't just rambling along, things are happening. There are a few moments of what I feared were generic fantasy, but having now finished this version I can confidently state that they're homages, not a lack of imagination.
Only one character thus-far is really developed, but she's very enjoyable and the dialogue is well-written (although not antiquated; everyone speaks in a modern idiom). Other characters seem to have the most important trait a character can have: hopes and dreams and troubles that don't revolve (solely) around the protagonist.
Speaking of which, the protagonist is massively overpowered (on purpose; it's tying in to the overarching story), but mostly just wants to be nice to people, which is a pleasant change from so many mind-raping, flesh-butchering superpowered protagonists in adult games.
The renders are decent enough. The gameplay is just a few choices while clicking through story, which is good. No bullshit grinding. But if you're still on the fence about playing it, let me give you a compelling reason to do so:
At one point, a woman gives the protagonist a blowjob. When he cums, it's too much for her to swallow and some jets out her nose. She then snorts it back in and swallows the whole load down. This is the power-move to end all power moves, and something that I have never seen a character do (which is a rare thing, these days). It was hilarious, and reason enough to give this game a shot.
All told, Homelander shows an incredible amount of promise, and has the all-important storytelling polish that makes me hopeful it'll continue to be excellent. I'm looking forward to more.
