Game is absurdly hard, I can barely pass the first night, and it seem the items don't even works sometime

it's not getting any better the following nights.
I didn't knew how to escape half the cast and ended up just staying in the base room watching in front of me and sometime roam around the floor to get some items (the pill that heal you is game winning).

I am having an issue where I can't select any of the options. It keeps going up automatically. Makes using the elevator or helping characters difficult. Anyone have an idea on how to resolve this? I don't have any other controllers or keyboards connected. The mouse is also disappearing.
