I echo AON's sentiment on this. One may either attempt pleasing the masses and end up with a project that seem lacking in artistic ambition, or focus on a few things that one strongly believes in and end up with a work that may become sought-after by those who have specific preferences.
With that out of the way, allow me to express my own stance on the male supporting roles in these games...
Personally, I really like it when a VN/game introduces a male character who gets to share a nonsexual but meaningful bond, a comradery, with the MC. I like that kind of brotherhood, or I guess one could say "bromance" featured in any story. Examples would iclude Liam from Acting Lessons, Chris from Leap of Faith, Stabby Mike from Once in a Lifetime, and perhaps to a lessor degree, older but sincere McCreary from Now & Then, and Ray the P.I. from Our Fate - A New Family via the gentle/kind MC path.
As for the non-MC male characters actually getting into sexual/romantic situations with the Love Interests, for me it really depends on the story and the characters. When I played DMD, it quickly became apparent that, even though D was supposed to be my primary romantic interest, I also wanted to be a good father to her as much as possible under the circumstances given in the game. This essentially made me feel compelled to allow D to experience things with someone closer to her age, such as Ryan (I guess that was his name? It's been a while) during the foursome that also involved Margo. D already was having an unconventional relationship with the MC, so I kind of wanted her to also feel like she didn't have to miss out on being with someone closer to her age group. For this reason, I did choose not to get her and other older men like Martin or Graham in sexual situations together, even though I appreciated those men as friends.
In fact, I write erotica as a hobby and I'm currently working on a novel where the MC (based on myself) has a harem of many girls. But the reality is that I can't keep up with that many girls at a time for obvious reasons, so I've actually introduced a few good-natured, trust-worthy male characters who could provide the girls with physical/sexual comfort of sorts when the MC is unable to do so. In my mind, this doesn't quite equate "cuck" or certainly not what the people on communities such as this one may refer to as "NTR", as the relationships that the MC has with these girls in his harem are not exclusive per se (although there is definitely love there). This particular "open" setting was actually inspired by one of the character models for the girls in the harem who, during the early stage of character development, conveyed to me that she would like to have access to many men as well if my character was to have his own harem. Seemed like a fair suggestion, so I have since incorporated it within the story.
So for me, this matter isn't quite clear-cut depending on whether we're strictly talking about nonsexual male supporting roles, or about those who may potentially end up with the MC's romantic partners. There are many things that may need to be taken into consideration so as to keep the story/game/VN/whatever enjoyable. But that's just me.
