Maybe because we don't know the code, but you don't need to because modifying the variable works. The most recently posted version of this left out the "active" part which may have an effect. Also note any changes to variables won't take effect until you move to a new scene, and if you then go backwards to the scene where you set the variable it will be reset.

SugarCube.State.active.variables.cheatmode = 5

I assume the reason why everyone is screaming about their save is because the usual navigation of clicking on text or around text isn't working? I can't advance a page anywhere using an old save. Just stuck seeing that first sentence

EDIT Never mind. there was an option that was turned off for some reason
