You are talking 50+ hour games with a lot of story and depth that keep people playing and wanting more.
Except, and this is something I can appreciate being new to, sometimes a person doesn't want to spend multiple-dozen hours playing something that is still not-yet complete. In time immemorial-slash-like a few years ago, when H games were still this new thing, we got by with "games" that pale in comparison to what we have available now, which still have the one leg up on them by having been complete to begin with. For some people, another leg up is that nobody asked for them and had to pay for them or their development for them to appear.

I won't claim this was planned to be as short as it is, but I can appreciate someone cutting their losses without dragging their heels, holding it hostage, or abandoning the project outright.

Sometimes, something that can be cleared in an hour or two is fine. If it doesn't take a significant dip in quality towards the end/last 500 frames, even better.

Its still incest. Nearly all incest porn with real people is usually step stuff.
More accurately, that's 'inseki', and even more accurately, these are games, not real people. As there is no inseki tag here, and as 'nearly all' incest porn involving fictional characters can afford at least being blood related (and boy is that a phrase I never thought I'd type), it isn't.

Too many "devs" don't know what they are doing. If you are getting into development and expect your first game to make you big bucks you are doing it wrong.

It takes time to build a player base and even longer to get a paying player base. People want to see consistency and launching a demo isn't enough for that. It's going to take at least finishing one game to get in enough people to call it a living.

I see too many devs coming in thinking of making that quick cash and it's just not possible any more.

Sure there are devs that made thousands very quickly but those launched their games when H games, especially in the west, were very few and far between. Now it's a pretty big industry with some impressive teams working on games that rival the AAA industry, especially those huge scale HRPG's coming from Japan.

Even Western porn RPG's are catching up with games like Opala, Roundscape, Renryuu, Daughter of Essence, Last Sovereign and many others. You are talking 50+ hour games with a lot of story and depth that keep people playing and wanting more.

Some of those, like Opala and Roundscape, took a while to build up while some are still getting there.

On top of that we have some amazing VN's like Depraved Awakening and Where the Heart is that are just starting to build up yet we get devs launching a demo and quitting when people don't throw money at them.

If money is the reason you are starting development, quit. You won't make any for a while, especially now after so many abandoned games. I won't support anyone until they get near to finishing their first game. I'll never throw money at demo's or 0.1's, it's not worth my time when I don't know if they will finish them or not. I'm not going to waste my hard earned money on developers I have no faith in.
Being on a pirate forum > talking about supporting developers. Really? That's not believable.
The 98% of the people here won't waste a single cent in supporting someone, a good reason for many of us to build solid DRMs like DarkSilver for Glamour. :D

Where do you think those subs on Patreon come from?

They don't know every game that comes out so they come to sites like this. Sure, it's a pirate forum, most folk here won't support a single game but a lot do. Sure I pirate games, I only support a couple so my piracy to support scale is well into the "plunder dat booty" territory.

Thing is, H games get very little advertising and only then if you pay for it. Patreon doesn't actively advertise adult content so you are left with word of mouth which, again, mainly comes from pirates.

As for building solid DRM, how long do you think that lasts?

At most it takes people a few days extra to get hold of content. AAA devs have been trying to stop pirates for years and the best they manage is Denuvo which is still cracked within a few weeks and no H dev has access to that level of DRM which means you are using servers whcih takes a little bit of creative coding to bypass. That's not DRM, it's a minor inconvenience that isn't going to increase your support.

If multi billion dollar publishers can't stop pirates, it's insanely hilarious to think a handful of barely passable amateurs has a chance.

I suppose people making that "solid DRM" are giving people something to do to crack it, the guys on Daughter for Desert do have fun on launch days waiting to see who cracks it first so there is that.

Well, Glamour is still uncracked. ;)

People have access to the server with plenty of guides on how to get on.

It's also been universally panned and has barely any content. As one of the resident lesbians it's the kind of game I usually enjoy but it isn't worth the time it takes to get on. Maybe i'll try again if it gets any better but I won't hold my breath.

Sorry, forgot my own. ;)

What I was meaning is that the paid content is not accessible anyway.

@Kravenar Games - hijacking another developer's thread to talk about "paid content", cracking and DRM is in poor taste. Not only is it off topic, it can turn off those members who follow his games.
What I'll say is that this game may be short, but it does showcase @Gurdin's abilities as an artist and programmer to the point where I am SERIOUSLY considering putting some of my dollars in his pocket cuz i like drawn art, fantasy, and a mix of adventure and sex. What's nice is that this game isn't hidden behind drm and nasty shit. And on top of that, gurdin is active and seems to be a cool dude. Bonus points for that.

Thanks for mentioning me, I didn't know about this thread before! ;)

I'll clear up some things about innkeeper. Many people seem to be saying I abandoned innkeeper, but it was intended to be a short game to begin with, so I could get myself used to Ren'Py and making games in general. As I get more used to making games, I want to create increasingly interesting game mechanics in future projects.

As a solo developer (I do have some help with the music, which I'm super thankful for), I'd rather focus on bite-sized games that I can actually finish, rather than have one of them "forever in development" projects. I personally prefer this as a patron for other creators as well.

I know a lot of people are pirating my content, which is kind of a bummer, but I expected it to happen. If you like it, just throw in a dollar and I'm happy, if you don't think it's worth it, so be it. I don't want to be rich, and don't expect to be from this. I just want more time to spend on drawing and making games. I'm already very thankful to the patrons I have now. Just for them I'll already do my best to regularly update.

Currently I'm working on Hentasia - the Rod of Power. It's quite a bit longer and more of a game than innkeeper is. Maybe people will still think it's too short when it's done, I dunno. The art is also better than innkeeper in my opinion, I'm learning! Already have plans for the next project, hoping to get some proper RPG mechanics going.

Apologies to people who wanted innkeeper to be more, maybe I'll revisit the inn at some point, but for now I like to focus on new ideas. :)

I hope things are a bit more clear about my intentions now. :) Back to development! Gurdin Out!
