Seems liked I sparked quite an argument here. Cloud is undoubtedly the future, but personally, I doubt that the majority of the indie game devs here will bother to secure their work with some fancy NAS-encryption-tech-online-thingy any time soon. For most, it is a passion and a hobby, which hopefully pays back a bit. There are online adult games right now, but I believe those to attract a totally different audience..
Of course devs are sometimes upset when their game is released only hours later on a site like this one, but on the other hand this is a way to attract future paterons. I know I became Patreon after I liked a game a few updates in a row.

But, if Joe is right and this does inevitably become a trend, casual adult gamers like myself are out. don't want to be logged and traced any more than I need to be. By the way, this ain't my real pic in the profile either.. ;-)

It's renpy. There is nothing they can code that will keep us out (the language is wide open). Even if they change language, it'll get decompiled or reverse engineered quickly.

DRM is pointless for its intended purpose -- to me, it's just an invitation to have a little fun.

You mean like lesson of passion games. Just search for it on this forum. It has been 2 years and still no crack. We occasionally get CGI rip but that is it. It is just the question how wiling are you to inconvenience your costumers and they are willing. And judging by this thread do not pull on that chain :-D

Completely untrue, you can require an online connection at all times and validate people having an active patreon, you could then say make the connection the the server that does that use elliptical curve encryption based on certificates, which you could also hash even further within the game.

Would it be possible to crack? Yes. The question is the breadth of knowledge required to do it and the time required for packet captures and seeing what a good connection does vs a bad one, then emulating it locally.

This is pretty much the reason why online games are the future, all the herp derp, we can just crack it won't happen if the content is never in your hands.

The stadia thing will slow us down for a bit, then frameworks will be built to combat that. At the end of the day, it's all just ones and zeros, and we, with our constantly expanding knowledge, can read it like a book.

The breadth of knowledge required to implement stadia-like systems will be prohibitive to the small studios (though, no doubt, google will build frameworks to make it easier).

As for piracy dying a slow death ...

Developers have only ever gotten shit for implementing DRM's into their games. Look at Bigbrother/Glamour, insane huge backlash because they set up DRM system which of cause sends traffic to somewhere in mother fucker Russia. Even if he is still popular the guy behind those games, a lot of people just jumped ship instantly because of this, and same for new people finding the game.
Or "Luna in the tavern" where you could not save the game if you where on the free version in the beginning, not sure how it is now.
But damn sure, if you want to upset 1/3 of your own community(perhaps more idk) go for DRM, in the end you wont accomplish anything. Somebody will will just fix an offline version after downloaded all the content, perhaps it will be x amount of days and weeks behind the official release. But that is about what you will accomplish, a small delay.
Better chance for scaring away people if you ask me, and wasting an insane amount of development time to implement this(where that time could and should have gone to the game).

Wow. I get the frustration especially for those who were patrons but in the grand scheme of things this particular update is hardly delayed at all (certainly compared to other games) and sounds like it will be quite meaty. Can't we just all get along--at least till we check out the latest update and see what it's like? Might be a nice surprise...whatever the past failures, I honestly do get the sense they are trying atm.

You're delusional and naive, Joe. First, service > piracy, like Gaben said. He's a wise man, you should listen to him. Second, Stadia is a stillborn baby and a laughing stock, basically. Third, security: smart people are tend to avoid to leave any personal data elsewhere and clouds are not secure by definition. Fourth, censorship: look at "Gone With The Wind" and alike. At this rate, you'll have to have a fucking physical copy if you'll want to watch original version of whatever favorite movie/any media product.

Excuse my little person for intervening, but I feel people becoming very aggressive, and I don't understand.

I'm not a Patreon, so I don't pay for the authors' work. When an update arrives, I am happy to discover the content of the game (story, X scene, etc). When I see that the update is late, I am sad because I want to see the rest of the game.

Now, those who pay every month, it is normal that they are furious at not getting what is promised.
You say you don't owe them anything. So why not work for free? Without Patreon? Because if you really don't need them, then you don't need their money either. They pay you because they want to see you continue, but if you make impossible promises, or if you can't keep reasonable promises, then it's normal for them to ask you to keep your promises.

On the other hand, I don't understand the Patreons who continue to pay despite their dissatisfaction. When I buy a game on Steam and I don't like it, I stop the fees. I can't claim a refund from Steam, but at least I stop spending my money. And if the game is deleted, or abandoned, why would I be angry? I no longer pay the subscription.

I do not know how Patreon works, but in my opinion, when a Patreon stops paying, a notice must be written, explaining why he stops paying. And make this notice public, so that the next "donors" can know why there are fewer donations. To give weight to the oldest Patreons, it would be good to add in addition, the duration that the person was a donor.

Well, I for one really enjoy the game. The art is fantastic and allthough the game design is questionable and the dialogue just goes on and on, without a really tightly written thread, there is something about the handling of the theme that really appeals to me. I understand that people are complaining and that a lot of patreons would be upset. I was a patron for a couple of months and when litterally nothing happened I dropped it. I sadly cannot afford to support EVERYONE whos work I appreciate, especially when promises aren't being kept. I'm surprised others aren't dropping them but that is their choice. I hope the devs are still motivated at least, because I think this game could become something pretty cool eventually.
