This is a huge blow... They made some crappy games and were stagnating over the years, but it's undeniable that their games were and still are the backbone of many games here in F95.

Yup. Love them or hate them, its undeniable that without Koikatsu and Honey Select a ton of games that we have now simply wouldn't exist. They provided a tool that opened up access to developers who might otherwise just not bother. Now that they are gone, how long are we going to stay with the same tools?

Surely we can't use honeyselect and koikatsu until the end of time. Somebody or someone has to step up, and there is no better time to do so.

It's also good to parrot what another dev in this thread said: Whats going to happen to the games that have been made using Koikatsu and Honeyselect? The company is gone now, but whats going to happen to their IPs? More importantly, what is going to happen to the IPs if they get scooped up? Do they go full Nintendo with them?

I haven't heard about them being bankrupt and in debt. It's just that they are not continuing further development.
They could probably sell the IP if they want but that kind of IP isn't something everyone would buy.
I don't think anyone is forcing them to sell their IP so it will probably be in limbo.

The possibility that someone in the west (Fakku?) could buy it isn't all that unbelievable. From the point of view of the private owners of the illusion IP, selling the rights to HS or KKS in return for $100k+ beats having it sitting in a basement somewhere forever. After that... well, Fakku's had a proven interest in going after HS games before this, before illusion stepped in to stop it.

It's the most probable outcome; Fakku already have an interest in distributing this game, they've already got the business relationship, an internal team that's worked with the codebase, and an existing audience that has bought Honey Select Ultimate, and might be in the business of buying HS2 Ultimate, HS3 Ultimate, etc.

Now, having said that... it's not necessarily the *worst* thing that could happen. Yes, it likely means that the bigger devs using HS or KKS (if they get both licenses) would get asked to pay licensing fees, but it would also possibly mean removing the semi-legitimate aspect from them, which could open up the ability to go onto Steam.

It might also, at some point, mean that we'll be seeing more realtime games reusing the engine; Fakku was a publisher/distributor, and might be interested in setting up deals where they'll license the engine for free in return for being the distributor (as Epic does), or in signing licenses giving source code access to companies that have the ability to push the engine forward.

Well shit, the hentai gaming industry just took a massive blow with this announcement. Say what you want about ILLUSION, they had a lot of problems for sure, but their games were still top-notch quality compared to most...

Thankfully, we have the amazing world that is Skyrim, Fallout and The Sims modding (especially the latter), which puts a lot of ILLUSION games to shame, so maybe it's not all that bad lol

Let's be fair, Illusion games were fine at best, and existed in the way they dit because of name recognition and being a niche product. They barely innovated over the course of their releases.

Well... The thing to fear the most now, is if some western "buisnessman" buys out their license after the bankruptcy and then uses it to sue all the top Patreon projects for easy cash. The Fakku accident 2.0.
That'd end a big part of westen game dev, as Studio stuff is the easiest way to make awesome graphics for one-people devs.

That would suck for the creative process indeed, but it's kinda weird to be crying over something that people have been stealing for so many years and using to make money off, and then being scared to be sued finally. Again, for the creative process it could indeed be a deathblow. But, relying on someone's work and not paying for it... this is what can happen indeed.

Illusion should have realised what people were doing with their games, maybe focus on a stand alone Studio with all the support mods offer. But hey, that would mean showing insight and innovation.

Hasn't that been happening all the time already with games like Subverse, Wildlife, and Carnal Instinct? Sure, those games might have their own flaws, and they might not be exactly like Illusion games, but isn't that the whole issue with Illusion games? That's why the Illusion Release Cycle meme exists in the first place. They barely did anything innovative. They just rehashed their own work over and over. Doesn't mean their products weren't enjoyable, but if you are looking for people exploring new horizons and risking things, Illusion is not where to look, it's with games like I mentioned before.

People are praying for KISS to take over the spot left by ILLUSION. Problem is, KISS has been real quiet ever since Custom Order Maid 3D 2, or at least i have never heard from them ever since.

Seems like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, The Sims and Conan Exiles will be our main "AAA hentai" from now on. And if the rumours about Starfield and GTA 6 being modder's paradise turn out to be true, those ones too.

I'd sooner look at the games I just mentioned than at mods for The Sims, Skyrim, etc.

"Stealing"? As far as I know, most KK/HS indie porn devs are not selling anything, they just have their Patreon/Subscribestar page for donations. By that logic, every twitchtv streamer is "stealing" because they earn money(through subscriptions and donations) by streaming games made and owned by someone else.
Similar situation with all the let's play channels on youtube.

Oh sorry, i should have explained it better in my post. ILLUSION games were top-notch in the graphical and animation quality. Honey Select 2 for example is a graphical marvel to look at (so much so that the game lags like crazy lol)

But modded Skyrim however, has any ILLUSION game beat in the gameplay department (even though this is an unfair comparison, as Skyrim isn't supposed to be a porn game). The crazy amount of things Skyrim modders have managed to pull off throughout the years is absolutely insane.

Asking ILLUSION to make a "hentai Skyrim" is asking for too much, especially considering they were a struggling company for years. But something that could have saved them is try to make something that's more than just a glorifided poser/scene viewer like what they've been doing for the past 10 years. OGs like me still remember the good ol' ILLUSION from the 00s that actually tried to innovate (Battle Raper could've become something seriously amazing had ILLUSION not given up on it too soon...)

If i remember well 2 years ago someone try made a Conan Exile but Porn Game instead with Scalie and Furry and normal, i remember saw a video of trailer but it was all, remember what it was the name ?

Was it Wild Life? It does have that Conan Exiles sort of vibe to it, but when i played it years ago, it was more like a pose/scene viewer on an open-world.

There's also Carnal Instinct, but that game gives me more of an AC Origins vibe

I guess there are those too, i suppose. Though i remember playing Wild Life back when it first released and ironically, it felt a lot like an ILLUSION game (being a glorified scene/pose viewer). I've checked some recent reviews here on this forum and seems like the game didn't progress much past that, despite being many years later

Modded Skyrim, Fallout and The Sims might be a lot of jank for sure, but at least you do get a whole AAA open-world game hentai experience with them thanks to our amazing modders at LoversLab. At least in my case, such an experience would trump any jank pretty easily.

I think you'll have better luck searching at LoversLab rather than here. That website has an entire section dedicated to the Sims modding, both The Sims 3 and 4.
