Character Spotlight: Denise

Denise never understood why people complained about spending time with their parents. In high school, while her friends rolled their eyes about family dinners or dreaded weekends at home, Denise just didn’t get it. She loved being with her parents. Most afternoons, she’d head straight from school to their café, finishing homework at a side table while her mom and dad brewed coffee and chatted with the regulars. If she finished her math early, her dad sometimes let her help behind the counter. Friday nights meant movies on the couch while weekends were for long walks around the city. She never wanted to be anywhere else.

California has always been home, even if Denise was born in Nevada. She barely remembers her time there before the family moved. Los Angeles quickly took over as the backdrop of her life. When her parents started the café, they worked punishing hours just to keep it afloat, but Denise never once complained. She knew they were working toward a brighter future. Money was tight, but it never felt like they were missing out. Her parents found time for little adventures, usually the free kind, but Denise’s favorite was always Sunset Boulevard. Cliché, crowded, totally a tourist trap. But she loved it. She’d catch glimpses of her parents simply enjoying each other, those days always feeling perfect.

A few years ago, everything changed. Her dad passed suddenly...a heart attack, and just like that, he was gone. Denise grieved hard, but her mom took it even harder. Losing her childhood sweetheart, her best friend, turned her mom quiet, a shell of who she’d been. The outpouring of support from family and the community helped, but only so much. Denise stepped up, ran the café, supported her mom, and tried to put together a new routine in a world that felt emptier without him.

Eventually, Denise moved the café into the city’s new mall, hoping a fresh start would breathe life back into the business and their lives. The old shop felt haunted by her dad’s memory, every corner echoing, It hurt to leave, but Denise knew her father would want them to keep moving forward. That’s what all his sacrifices were for.

But Denise dreams of more than just the café. Someday, she wants to sit in a little Parisian café, coffee in one hand, a good book in the other. It’s the love her parents shared that made her romanticize Paris. She’s inexperienced in love, never having dated much...not because she’s waiting for some prince charming but because she knows what the real thing looks like. Why settle for less? Still, the solitude is wearing on her. Surrounded by people all day but going home alone, she’s more open these days to letting someone in...provided they're sweet, caring, and not a total douchebag.

For now, she's focused on keeping things afloat. The new location isn't as busy as she'd hoped (yet), and the debts, especially to Mr. Salgato, weigh on her. But Denise is stubbornly optimistic. She believes in brighter days, bigger crowds, and finally making it out of the red.

Until then, she puts her heart in every cup. If you ask her, nobody in town makes coffee quite like she does. And she’ll prove it, one customer at a time.
