Well, if it helps anyone, apparently the old save files don't work. No events trigger with any character, and character progress gets stuck at the save point.
You can use the old save files with the Patreon unlocker on the main page.

Seeing people complain about stuff they didn’t pay for never gets old. Hope dev keeps doing his thing and sticks to his schedule because that’s when he makes the best updates
Everytime I try to download the zip for the game, windows defender keeps flagging the file as a virus. Is anyone else getting this issue?

I also hope that one day he'll do what other games do and not promise an update on a certain date just to make people angry about why he can't make 15 animations in a month and a half
