Promising, but needs improvements.
The Last Devil puts you in the shoes of a the leader of the Demons, bent on conquering the world and after his last armies just got eliminated, well, he has to take matters into his own hands and find new allies.
The gameplay is very reminiscent of a rogue-light game like Hades: You have a hub area you return to where you can invest the spoils of your run in various ways to strengthen your character, unlock new things, or improve the relationships with your prospective captured allies.
Credit where credit is due, the gameplay is very promising. The developer has used a series of plugins to get a lot out of the RPG Maker, which also explains why the title released as early access. Knowing the plugins used, especially the notoriously difficult to implement Q plugins, designing the gameplay loop must have been the work of many, many months.
You can freely move around, use dashes to avoid attacks, and use your skills to combat the enemies. Much like in Hades, you can find upgrades within the run itself to improve your skills.
While many upgrades are just your average stat improvements, there are also a lot that change how a skill works, allowing you to fire multiple fireballs instead of one, gaining life-leech, freeze effects, stuns, or even an explosion at the impact.
This keeps the gameplay loop varied & fresh, although the number of skills is currently relatively low. The game cannot begin to approach the impossible diversity of Hades' skills, boons, items, etc. but it is moving into the right direction and with more effects & abilities, the gameplay has tremendous potential to be a good rogue-light game in its own right - if more skills, items & effects are added.
The NSFW element is currently somewhat lackluster.
The art itself is very well drawn & highly polished, but only very few scenes per character are planned.
Currently, you can only see scenes with Charlotte, the trap elf, and your maid. The long gameplay loop (30 stages with 3 boss stages to beat per normal map) ensures that a lot of time progresses between any NSFW elements, and the relationship grind (giving found fetish items to a character) is very slow. So while the gameplay is promising, the NSFW content is lacking.
The individual scenes are very well drawn, but they go very quickly straight to the action. There's not really any relationship building or anything that makes you grow to like the character or get a good idea of who they are. This turns them more into sex-objects, rather than real allies or companions, and it would be great if the developer would let the inspiration from Hades lead into more interaction with companions. (Help during runs, special skills, or even the character showing up at times and helping to finish an encounter much like Thanatos in Hades)
One big issues seems to be the developers plans of the quanitity of content and the direction of the NSFW content. The currently featured trap elf is actually the only male character, with the next ones being female. This, given the lack of scenes & characters, is unfortunately misleading for people who hope to find a lot of gay trap content, while people who would enjoy the mostly female characters are currently tricked into thinking the game is not for them because of the gay content.
All in all, the game's fun to play, albeit too grindy and the content limited (due to it being early access).
The quality is very promising, but one can only hope the developer broadens the content and adds a lot more sex scenes for various fetishes, adds more characters and perhaps makes them develop a closer relationship with the player.
In Hades, you could feel the personality with the Gods and feel supported or thwarted by them, depending what they did. Here, the characters are currently only superficial.
Let's hope the early access works out to give the devs the funding they need to provide the quantity of content the game needs.
