Other than the fact that most people don't know how to read a VirusTotal result and understand the concept of false positive? It's not all that uncommon for people (who don't use ad blockers) to accidentally download malware from an ad and mistake that as the file everyone else is getting. There's also cases where a specific program or file packaged with the game, such as ones used in text hooking programs, gets flagged and people that don't understand why it gets flagged have a knee-jerk reaction of calling the download a virus.
I think that in itself is plenty fair, and I understand skepticism, but hostility towards someone clearly going out of their way to help others is at the very least strange. I don't quite understand the culture here.
You indeed have it wrong. I'm not wholly up to date with today's computer security, but you can literally get malware from an infected ad playing on a website (which has happened to me even before I discovered porn), opening an infected email, clicking an infected link that seemingly doesn't do anything, viewing an infected zip file, just having an infected zip file on your system, etc. You also have to understand that a zip file can look like a zip file, smell like a zip file, and feel like a zip file, but is actually an executable. You should never open any suspect file, link, whatever, even out of curiosity. Not all viruses behave alike and just as your antivirus updates every so often, so too do viruses designed to get around that.
