So, I'll admit. I passed over this game for several months. The art style just didn't initially appeal to me. However, another dev whom I've enjoyed the pleasure of getting to know, recommended this game to me again. This person also has a game that heavily appeals to me, so I took it to heart, and gave this a try.
I am so glad I did. This is a masterpiece of a game. But lets do this properly, shall we?
Graphics/Art: As I said, initially, I did not appreciate the art style. While it is still not truly my cup of tea, I absolutely came to appreciate it through my game play. The fact that there is actual cinematography is amazing. Its not just static images and basic animations. No, it goes so far beyond that. Even if you, like me, aren't sure about the art style, please try to look beyond your initial views. It's worth it!
Audio: Every moment of this game is accompanied by appropriate, and often significant, music. Its not just random stuff thrown in either. The music fits the elements of the scenes. Happy, sad, reflective, dancing, etc. It hits all the notes (no pun intended) for a terrific gaming experience.
Story: Absolutely terrific and endearing story. Yes, you get the often used "MC's partner died and now he is left to care for those who survived" type situation, but it plays such a deeper and integral role. That partner is more than just a passing statement to establish a storyline. She remains part of the story, making appearances to attach you to your "wards", giving you all the feels. The wonderful writing, combined with the music, and the scenes... It just all ties together perfectly.
Gameplay: There are plenty of choices to be made throughout the game. Not just with your "wards", but with other characters as well. And those choices DO impact the game. The Dev makes an effort to ensure that you know if a choice will severely impact the game or not, but still gives you the option to proceed how you wish. Other, less impactful choices aren't telegraphed, but still determine where the game goes.
Overall, if you're on the fence for this, make the jump. Its worth it. I've now become a Patron, and happily so.
Enjoy!
