Imouto Life Fantasy, is a great "cohabitation" game, but it doesn't work as well as a hybrid with roleplaying elements.
Basically, if we are just looking at the "roommate factor", I'd put this below "1 room: Runaway girl", but the night phase minigame present in "imouto", is a very strong positive, and really propels the game to one of the best titles in the genre (do note that the night phase is a "training game mechanic", that's important).
Before talking about the roleplaying side of things, I have to go on a tangent, and mention the previous game "Imouto life monochrome". The problem with that title was a lack of events, social circle, and character traits. Basically, there's little to no "incest feeling" in that game, and the repetition factor is exacerbated by 2 lifeless characters, who know nothing but each other.
Returning to "Imouto fantasy", this was corrected, by introducing traditional fantasy elements like: adventurers, guilds, monsters, magic etc... Not only that but the protagonist and the sister, also got some defining traits, and they now feel closer to siblings. Sounds like "happy days all around", doesn't it? Then why did I say that the innovations don't work that well?
2 reasons:
- The first is that the game mechanics are poorly implemented - I appreciate the effort but the combat and quest system is utterly substandard.
- Second and the real problem - the brother/sister aspect remains largely unexplored. All the improvements were placed in the wrong parameters. (it's more of a "what I want isn't here kind of deal", if I'm being honest, not exactly fair). The sister has no circle of acquaintances, and I only remember one meaningful interaction with the cast (some jealousy). The brother is a bit better (some would be heroines in the guild), but it's still not enough from my perspective.
Is "imouto life fantasy" a good game? Yes absolutely. Does it feel like it could go beyond that and become a legend in adult games, the best ever in the cohabitation genre? Yes, no question. Right now its potential hasn't been fully realized. Let's have the sister having some friends, go outside, visit the brother's guild, have some sort of hobby. Let's have the brother grow a personality, have some dialogue choices, and a conflicted inner world due to the entire premise of the title.
I'd say this a 9/10, by comparison to some other things here, and as you can quite clearly tell, most of the problems I have with "imouto" are ME problems. This is a very good game, and I highly recommend it, it's just that I can't shake the feeling this could be amazing with a few extra "touches".
This is coming to Steam (kagura games). If you end up really liking this, keep that in mind.
