Here's a hypothetical example:...whar?
Person A has a problem (usually technical) and asks around if anybody knows how to fix it.
Loads of Person Bs chime in with what sound like like fixes that could work.
Person A claims to have all tried all of those already, stating that they don't work.
Person A comes back in about a week claiming to have fixed it themselves, thanking the Person Bs for the effort (probably sarcastically).
The Person Bs all ask "How?" but never get a response.
That's why "but I'm not telling you" both sounds and smells bad.
