My opinion is that the combat and other mechanics are different. However, for me, the biggest difference is graphical. The images in my events are very polished, and I believe they have a lot more work put into them. Of course, as always, people can choose what they prefer.
For now, spying only makes them angry and shows you a new image. In the future, depending on your relationship, the interaction might change. On the other hand, if you knock on the door, you'll have more options and new events.
