Dark Elves in Anime and Japanese media are usually just tanned elves.
Look for official art of Pirotess from Record of Lodoss War, probably the most prominent Dark Elf in anime, at least she's the most popular and earliest depiction of a dark elf in anime that I know of. She set and popularized the Dark Elf aesthetic for anime.
I know. That's why I mentioned "slightly tanned" in the lineup (Japanese cultural demands are so inveterately racist, they c/n even accept making dark elves actually fully dark). Truuuust me, I know abt Pirotess. Theres a great rule 34 comic all abt her.
But this chick looks like she keeps out of the sun except for PTA picnics: not even tanned. Goalposts moved so far it means nearly the opposite of intent.
Still appealing art, and it's not like it completely kills its value, but it's a bit jarring. They shoulda just called her an elf and called it a day.
