Where are good locations to build a base? I keep building just on the beach where you start out but I'm wondering if there's a better spot
It depends on what you want to achieve. To be honest, you don't need to just have one base of operation.

You can always have a main base and multiple smaller outposts to get more specific resources.

However, if you want to limit a raid in a certain location to appear only one direction, you want to get a decoy accessory from the villager getting swept away and also positioning that villager wearing the decoy to intentionally choke out the raid spawning location.

For example, if you set up base at the iron mine entrance on the east side of the map and have the decoy around the south part of the road of the mine. It will mainly spawn south and west of the location. If you place it in a particular spot, the raid will spawn across the river.

In the sky above the sea(y)
or maybe it could be in the sky above the land but a bit higher. .
It's safe from raids, and you also need to install fences around the entire area you'll use as your base.. Otherwise, your NPC could fall..
It won't have any impact, but it will definitely be a hassle to find them..

I'll do one better.

Just keep it simple and build your base in the caves.

The better cave with enough space is actually the iron mine.

Basically, raids can't occur while you're in a cave, and if a raid were to happen, they will come to your main character instead.

How to trigger Yona "defeat" scenes against bosses? Is there like a hidden criteria or something? Sometimes it's just skips to the respawn scene without showing the H scene at all.

just let yona down and don try to get up while u still have white hearts
Those only applies to random mobs I think. I was talking about bosses like the treasure hunters duo, ugly bastard in tent, etc. Where you'll need to expend all of your HP and hearts to see the "defeat" scene.
Sometimes the lose H scene triggers. Sometimes it doesn't, and skips to the "where do you want to respawn" screen.

I experimented with an in-cave base a while back but lighting the place was a pain and the bats drove me crazy, so I ended up dismantling and moving my main operations to a sky base. Much nicer there ;)

That's fair, and if you know how to make one, then all the power to you.

I found the object placement annoying in this game, but it is what it is.

Since you made the sky base, can you do farming up there? I assume it can be done since it doesn't follow real-world logic in this game.

How are you connecting the flat sections of the sky base? I assume you used a platform to make the floor of the base.

I have a memory of a goldfish since I'm not recording all the discussion and questions I had.

What is the optimal number per anime/slave/village to each workstation?

Is there a thing called overcapacity? This is when you allocate too many NPCs to a workstation to have it function properly.

From what I read in this thread, it has a limit.

But how does this work when assigning a NPC to work on the farm?

General rule is 3 workers per job site. (3 workers working simultaneously at the same time.) There are exceptions though. And depending on playstyle/base layout you might want a slight overcapacity anyway to cover for downtime and travel time.

But how does this work when assigning a NPC to work on the farm?
Farm (planters) is one of the exceptions. Planters can only have 1 worker working on them for every 4 plots they have, so 1 worker for the small wooden planter and 2 workers for the large stone one.

If you're talking about livestock farms instead then I think it's also another exception -- 1 worker per "breeding" pen. (more like a livestock pen, but eh.)

--

Some caveats:

1. NPCs don't respect their territory circles when picking job sites. So long as their territory circle is set to anything higher than the minimum, they will search for valid job sites in a huge 10m radius (10m = horizontal width of 4 stone platforms) whenever a "work check" occurs. This makes it hard to limit NPCs to specific job sites.

2. "Work checks" only happen in active cells. The whole map is divided into 400 square cuboidal cells (think they stretch the whole height ), each with their own map ID (visible using /mapID). Most of the time only the current cell the player is in plus the eight surrounding cells are active. (Additional cells will be loaded when a raid is ongoing.) In other words, NPCs will stop working when you're far away enough from them.

There is some sort of code running to compensate for lost work time in inactive cells when you return, but I think it only works properly for mining/logging/excavation.

Wasn't it like 6? Since 3 can work on station, but take brakes after working, having another worker per slot would be best to have little downtime.

Object placement can be a bit maddening, yeah. It takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you can go pretty fast (talking about platforms, walls are a whole other mess--especially in the sky).

I posted twice about my sky base project, here are the links--screenshots included (there's a video, too):

To be fair, I haven't played the game much since I posted those, so I haven't done much more progress on the base (though I did move all my workbenches there).

As for farming... Eh, I hadn't even thought about that lol. Now I'm curious. Next time I run the game I'll try to set some stuff up there, and I'll report back ;)
