Not really. In fact, you can just not give them any, because they wouldn't be taking damage.
And since food and water's radius is big, you can put support facilities on the ground, or even feed them from the same facilities as the ones that support the "gate" guards.

And if they ever introduce ranged units, then it's done for.

Ranged units do exist. The pygmies that throw Molotov cocktails. Not sure if they come in regular raids, but I think they come in Halloween raids.
But if your food and water supply lines are working properly, they will recover in due time.

I was thinking a complete and compact unit that requires natives to craft (like the child delivery bed requires old woman to craft). Even advanced ones like ballista or catapult.

If you somehow manage to get your hands on a workshop mod, then sure, just shove it into "mods" folder near the saves folder and DLC folder.

have it in the hot bar. right click it. or if you want a specific npc to eat, talk to the npc and then right click. if food has [raid effects] you can put it on a table to give nearby friendlies the buff

Yes. If you see a post with a new version, you can help uploaders by reporting it as a game update. This is an unconventional use of "report" functionality standard to the forums, but it seems to work.

Note that developers tend to hide actual development progress, and mostly write changelogs about bugs.
But if updates quickly follow one another, that's a sure sign of bugfix update, yes.
