It’s basically a platform for sharing models, workflows, and prompts.
That’s actually where I started my AI journey — I think it was back in 2022 — and for a couple of weeks, I even held the top spot as the #1 NSFW LoRA trainer

As the community grew, more people started training and fine-tuning their own models.
I, on the other hand, got more into generation than training.

Once the site expanded, they added built-in image generation directly on the platform, along with the ability to buy site currency for generations.
You can also “buy” some models for download — but honestly, like 99% of them are totally free.
And they hit there - like you can't buy the buzz anymore via MC or VISA.

Even if Civitai shuts down, I’ve got most of my models saved locally — as long as my PC doesn’t fry again like it did last year
(Although in that case, it was the motherboard that died — not the drive — so I managed to recover most of my data.)

But yeah, if the platform went down, the community would take a big hit.
We’d lose that quick way to adapt and fine-tune models — just when we’re finally starting to seriously explore video-based models too.
