Seeing some of the more recent critical reviews honestly makes me wonder if the writing is that bad, because I haven't played this game in months to really remember if its good or not.
Nah, the writing's still great imo, this is just one of those games that puts a lot of detail into whatever scenario the MC gets involved in without any type of animation, and that isn't for those who are more interested in direct visual stimulation. I get attached to characters; I want to see them fleshed out, not just get their flesh drilled in.

For what it's worth, I almost never review games and noticed those critical reviews, so I felt like I needed to make my voice heard and explain why I personally think this game is a borderline masterpiece.

Ditto.
I'll add, the proofreader they have/had was really badass, that helped a lot these past years. Kudos to you, William.

I'd also like to repeat, please stop, don't make requests here, especially about art. MGD is a text-based game. Art is money. Do we want MGD to turn into a Night Games-like? Where dev does nothing but throw some money at thralls so they work for him to get moar money?

I am in fact targeting the correct Shizu
Were you using "Pin", by any chance? The latest patch should've fixed that.

Images are still good. But that just me, cause I like colors.

The quality of mods vary quite a bit. I think Gren is pretty good, but I can understand Thresh wanting a more coherent setting/cast of characters.
I've actually been thinking of making a mod of my own. Since futa is blacklisted and all. Probably just one character.
You know what, never mind. I made a basic character for the forest dungeon. Everything was going well. I had an intro. I had a combat encounter that I tested out and that worked fine. Then suddenly I got nothing but stinking error messages. So I give up. Godspeed to all of you who actually manage to get through the travails or coding.

Is there a list of all CGs that are currently in the game? From the top of my head, I recall Slime Girl, Forest Dungeon Mini Boss Cat, Sophia (in a way) and Kimono Girl.

Is it even 'most' at this point? I thought that Beris was the last girl that didn't have artwork?
Last was a bag mimic.
I wasn't 100% sure and I couldn't bear the possibility of having to hear that fool go off on me about forgetting one side character with a single line of dialogue who doesn't have character art yet.

Is there a balanced build for a first time playthrough? I've always been terrible at these sorts of games, and I didn't see any guides on the wiki.

I call this imafflictedwithmasochistandliketobedominated build:
max your luck and use headpat everytime then hope for the best
for maximum effect choose tactical defeat perk and purchase adventurer bookmark accesories
(i recommend contraceptive rune but it falls to personal preference)
enjoy and happy adventuring Oh, Chosen Hero!
