Consider also that anything 'optional' means more work for the dev. If you plan to put out, let's say, 2 hours of content per release, then you start to 'this sequence is optional, this other sequence is optiona, this can be skipped' you erode the overall playtime, so you have to also put alternative content to fill the lack.
