There's more to it than what the flashbacks in the Episode 1 implied.How was mc was found innocent after beating an unconscious guy to the death??indeed it all started as self-defense but the moment the guy was unconscious and he kept hitting him he went from defender to aggressor.
Maybe that's one of the white privilege the game keeps mentioning.

. When rich kids get in trouble in America, they're usually white. They have money to grease the right palms and get their charges dropped to something lower. Money talks (e.g. Alvin Kamara's case).
