Considering the dev went almost 9 months between v0.8 and v0.9 I'd say this falls into the What A Legend category of getting one update a year.

Once it was told that this is a project the dev does in his spare time that was the conclusion, maybe sometime we will be lucky and get an extra update a year but I am expecting 2 updates per year until completion

Can't get this to work, put it in game folder and appdata. Keeps resetting to zero somehow.

If you had previous saves files with the same name/placement in the grid, they will take priority. Try clearing them out or cutting them if you want to have a backup, also consider that alongside the saves in the game folder there is likely a renpy folder in the computer that will have a copy of the save files that you also need to check:
You can get to the AppData folder following the path or by pressing WinKey + R, then pasting %appdata% in the textbox to go to Roaming directly. Make sure Hidden Folders are turned on since App Data is a Hidden Folder
