I think it's just the lack of an update which is worrying people, not so much the missed timeframe.
Even if there's a lack of an update, it should be of some reassurance that he was last seen online in general. Other devs who have abandoned a project just disappeared from social media completely. He is probably still working on the project but has had issues, but after seeing how other developers have faced backlash for that is afraid to be upfront about it. He'll come around when he comes around, and if we don't see him online again in the next few months, then I can understand considering this game abandoned. Though hounding him and pressuring him for not updating on time and not telling us (who he has no obligation to do so) what may have happened, would probably scare him away more. This is his forum for his game, people should make him feel welcomed and secure, not like an online mob. Sorry for quoting you, I'm not targeting you specifically, but the statement you're putting out there itself.
I for one am dying to see an update for this game. I've loved the characters, the story, the rendering, and the animation so far, so much. I'm willing to wait though. It's been almost two months, but games take time. Set deadline or not, you can't rush perfection. I'm willing to wait another month or so for this game, especially if that just adds on a lot of new juicy content to this already great game.
