I really like that scene, but I've seen it trigger in game like once, and there's so much content in there that's gated behind specific traits, wardrobe choice, and RNG. It's a whole storyline worth of content that I never would have seen without replaying it over and over via forced custom scenes.

Each of those 3 scenarios could be their own scene, since they have as much or more content than the normal random scenes.
I have no idea how long it'd have taken me to write it if it wasn't gated behind those things, but it would have been a lot longer.

I'd say substantially longer. To be honest, I think that the reason why there's no competition with NewLife is because few people are willing to put in as much work as SO does, not the opposite.

I wrote the 'Shyness Cure' scene, which folks generally have said they enjoy. It took me the better part of a year to get done, and I was putting in a fair bit of work, although it was not my day job.
To be fair, I think this point bears more in favour of the other perspective. The Shyness Cure is a very large chunk of content for this game, and high quality. From it taking you the length of time you describe, yes, meeting that should probably take SO several months to match. He does not put out that kind of content over the course of a few months.

More importantly, though, this is not accomodating for why it took you such a big chunk of time to get done. I'm not going to state it categorically for you, but can you remember how much of that time was actually planning and writing down the on-screen content vs how much was trying to make it actually work with the existing system of the game?

From their blog

Major changes & additions:
  • Added an office party event. Some paths require a sleazy boss.
Minor changes:
  • Added some alternative lines for when your husband refuses to wear a condom on your wedding night, as the standard text felt a bit out of place there.
  • Added some more detail to the dating app's description of the man, as requested by Brobort.
Bugfixes:
  • Fixes to text issues. Thanks to Sync, Aetherial and AnarChYsT for reporting some of these.

Someone commented that SO was a lazy bitch milking his patreon on his blog, SO literally wrote 6 3-4 paragraph long responses to it at 5am, saying how he's not a lazy bitch milking his patreons.

More effort was put into those posts than the last 5-6 updates.
Oh, man. I guess I slightly overestimated him when I was taking the piss.

More people stop pledging to this and those who do either forgot about the game or are his true supporters who won't share.

i guess if you're really desperate, try tagging the guys who previously posted the patreon versions and see if they still sub to SO but forgot.

I went to go see for myself and, for all its length, the response does little to actually address the issue. Someone else in the comments pretty much dismantled the 6 updates worth of argumentation with a single concise post about the poor code structure and how, even if SO is putting in as much time as he says, he does a really bad job of looking like he's trying.

I know this game is controversial for its pace of updates and how much content actually gets added, but if I were to give it a try, does anyone have recommendations for what sorts of character builds and decisions have the most content? I find this game kind of overwhelming, since there are so many different ways to approach it and I don't know what special scenes are where.

It's more like a roguelite game that you need to play through a bunch of times with different builds to see the content. Including using a character editor to have NPCs with the right traits to trigger scenes. Don't worry about it too much for your first time, make a character that you like and play with that.

Increase the game length to 2+ years, though. Triggering stuff like marriage and the following scenes in one year can be really tough sometimes. The actual endings are pretty boring, so the game really ends when you get tired of playing a character.
