I would recommend this dev here wholeheartedly actually. Don't let it get to you if it seems overly simplistic at first it's one of the greatest games ever made I can assure you. It's also more of an rpg. Link:

Had it too on my old pc , the boxes went away after I got a better computer so I wanna say your set up is too weak ? but I don't see how this rpg maker game should be demanding. it's most likely the game just coded like spaghetti.

Yeah this game has a couple of decent scenes if you are REALLY not worried about the art style, but honestly not even worth the download. Who makes an intro that spoils all the actual scenes?
