walk on all the glistening spots around town then talk to the statue in the middle. if that doesn't work reinstall the game.

pretty sure it's "36172326" but i didn't make a save before entering the code so i can't test it (also i don't think you can get in there before beating the final boss even if you know the right code.)

if that code isn't right after you beat the final boss you can talk to this guy and he'll make you fight some enemies before telling you how to figure out the code

Nah, this is nothing new. Other games have done the same several times before and a few times since.
