As for some tips, just keep making stuff. When you produce something that you don't really hate that much, export the render settings and lights, and try to re-use it in the future. You get to a point where you start to know what works and what doesn't. I have a decade+ experience in 3ds max and photoshop, and a couple years less in daz.
