We need a government (American) run social media, where speech is only restricted by law. It's hard even for me to expect public facing platforms to just allow all kinds of speech within the legal limit, because they have other concerns, not the least of which is maintaining a community (like you said NTR hating is banned on this thread because it's supposed to be for people who like it).Because the NSFW community isn’t a monolith of free speech absolutists. Many people are actually OK with banning certain shit. The question is where to draw the line.
Even here on F95, you’ll find very antagonistic comments regarding furries, roricon… and even NTR. This is an NTR thread so you won’t see many negative comments, but you’ll absolutely find them outside of it.
That way people with edgy opinions/content will always have at least one place to fall back on where they can't be deplatformed. The problem ofc is the politically charged nature of the topic. Elon Musk did give it a heroic effort (he took on billions of debt to buy twitter and received a fuck ton of negative press for bringing back the people that had been banned like Kanye West for example) but has been seriously stymeid by
a. public backlash (lots of legally protected speech is anathema to the broad public) which he can't afford because X/Twitter is company that needs profits.
b. foreign governments don't share the US Constitution and have banned and coerced censorship on the platform in order for X/Twitter to be able to continue operating within their borders. Again, because this is a for profit company, Elon can't afford to just lose out on that many potential users.
c. his own self
So yeah I think we need a Public version of Twitter/Facebook/Reddit etc, but it's a long way off, the political climate just isn't right for it now.
