An announcement lifted from Patreon:

Announcement!!!

This will be the last chapter of season 1 of One Day at a Time. Why you ask? Because I don't like how much we are having to compress the android version and the compressed version.

If any of you play My New Family, it will be done the same way that game did it. No questions to answer, none of that stuff. Your saves will transfer over to the new season (which will just be chapter 12 and all chapters after) and it will be like nothing ever happened. I just did a test version of it with a dummy file (not to mention I mod that game and know it worked from experience).

Thank you to Killer7 for showing me the way and to quote him "thank you beautiful people" for continuing to be here! Cheers!

Small rant, some are claiming (not in this thread) that the MC is handling situations better now and he has "perfect" answers to everything.
I've played hundreds of games here, and One Day at a Time is in the very small handful of games where the characters really seem like real people, faults and all. I don't know much about hard drug addiction, though I have seen alcoholism up close and personal throughout my life, but playing One Day at a Time, really hits home what addicts go through, in a empathetic way. Sure, some parts of the story are idealized, in that all the girls seem supportive with the MC sleeping around with everyone, but it is a game after all, and it ok to be fun, and a little escapist.

I have really enjoyed seeing the MC, Lydia, and Marie experience sobriety together after being addicted for such a long time. It is a heartwarming experience. I was genuinely touched by everyone showing how much they love and care for the MC after his car accident, for example, and in many other occasions.

I think that the criticism that the game is not dark enough now that most of the characters are sober is missing the point. Perhaps some people rather play a game with unrelenting misery, but most people, myself included, like to see some light at the end of the tunnel in whatever stories I read or play. It doesn't mean everything is perfect, and like you said, I am sure there will be more trials to come, but having an emotional and overall character arc is just good storytelling.

You are doing a great job, Zoey, with One Day at a Time, and I feel that I am richer for having played it. Like many have already said, no matter what you do, there will always be some that complain. For everyone that thinks it is too light, another person will say it is too dark. Best to just tell the story you want to tell, and the authenticity of your story, told the way it is the most meaningfull to you, will come out as a better overall experience for the player.

Small rant, some are claiming (not in this thread) that the MC is handling situations better now and he has "perfect" answers to everything.

A. I don't agree with this, he goes to someone for advice or regurgitares what he has heard in the program to help others (which is what you do no matter how long you've been sober).

B. He should be handling situations better now that he's sober. If he would have stayed a piece of shit the whole game there would be no character development or him moving towards helping others.

C. He's getting to see the affects of addiction on others now and how what he did must have affected others.

D. Serious stuff is still happening pretty much every update in the game to at least someone, they cannot all be calamities or that would be unrealistic.

E. I've much more to tell and just because MC is OK right now doesn't mean he won't mess up at some point (which I've hinted at in this thread several times). More things are gonna happen in his journey through sobriety, and the outcome will largely be determined by his decisions (not all events, but many).

F. People have said the game is too dark, and now that a little more light is shining in it's too happy (which I don't get, because as I said there is almost always someone dealing with something).

G. As I said the story is not over yet. I gotta give ups to be able to have downs and things that are overcome.

Rant done, sorry just frustrated that at times the game gets judged on where it's at currently and not where it will end up. If I were writing a book I'd just give you all the finished product and you could see everything. But that's not how the serial nature of VN's work.

If anyone has comments, by all means fire away.
You do you. (y)

I'd even argue that, because this is based on your personal experiences, realism is probably actually less important than communicating your point to your audience.

If the audience doesn't like that, well... they read the description. They knew the risks. :devilish:

Man... if our porn isn't escapist on some level, then WTF are we even doing with our lives?

It's a different kind of porn, written for and about people who are escaping from different kinds of problems. Problems arguably more significant than "where's my harem of hotties with color-coded hairstyles that conveniently telegraph their kinks?" And I'm here for it, regardless of whether it turns out to be my jam or not.

Dev Update #36 (Progress)

Looks like Sam is rolling them bones!

At around 4 weeks of development we are currently at a little under 4000 lines of code, 1242 renders and 12 animations (yes that's an ODAAT record for animations, and that's just the first day). I'm actually rendering the last three of those animations today, that's why I'm doing this dev log now, so I don't have to take time away from development tomorrow.

Here's the deal, this casino asset was WAYYY more resource intensive than I thought it would be. The average render time in there was 30-40 minutes and I did 267 renders. I'll let you do the math on how long that would take. Easily the longest render times I've faced in the whole game.

The next thing is I've been rendering the animations for the 2 H scenes at the end of the first game day for the past 2 days. Each animation averages around 7-8 hours. So, that's eaten up a lot of time too. But, since this is the finale of the first season, and one of the scenes you guys have likely been waiting for, for a while. I thought go big or go home!

After the animations finish tomorrow morning sometime (yes I've been setting an alarm and getting up in the middle of the night to change to the next one) I have some foreplay renders to finish up, and we'll finally be done with the first day of the update!

I'd like to tell you guys I'll be able to get the second day done and the whole update polished and tested by the end of the month, but I'd be lying to myself and you. And as you know, I'm about being upfront and honest.
The second day has turned into more than I thought it was gonna be with some added story beats. A lot of questions will get answered about people back home, and since we haven't seen them for a while, I don't wanna skimp on that.

Examples: If you're on the Molly path, developments with that asshole Ronnie who won't leave her alone. Brenda might be really happy to see you if you're on her path, never know. We need to meet with Kayla (not at her other job yet, that will be in the next update). We need to find out how Melissa is doing with the news she heard in the last update. We also need to find out what the hell is going on with Rick, and more stuff I won't spoil.

So, if you put me down to a release date prediction today, I'd have to say early June. I wouldn't have taken the time off I did after public release if I'd have know I was gonna injure my finger. But, life happens unfortunately. I will not be taking any time off after public release of this update. It will be right into the next. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is sorry not sorry (although I loathe that expression, a better one isn't entering my mind at the moment).

I'll check in with your guys in another couple of weeks.

As always, hope you are all doing well, I think this update will be both fun and impactful on a lot of fronts, and I can't wait to share it with you! Cheers!

That makes sense, didn't even know there was another choice besides Brenda but I love Brenda so I'm not going to cheat on her even if it's just to see that scene haha.
I was just reading this again for some reason and I didn't answer it properly. It's and either OR thing. If you choose not to work for Brenda when she asks you to, you'll end up working for Molly by default. So, it requires a different save to get Molly's path if you worked for Brenda, just wanted to make that clear to everyone.

Unless somebody changes the code so that you can do both. o_O Isn't there a name for that? A mod maybe? :D

I just modded some code, so we can start a new season after chapter 11. That will be my only mod on the game. :)
Zoey, Walter raising the possibility of a mod to you had me laughing so hard I nearly choked. It was tongue in cheek of course but so damn funny I couldn't stop laughing. Even more amusing since you've chosen to create a mod! Well done. Still chucking.

Just fuckin' with him back! :) Really though it's gonna be nice to start over with the file size in Ch. 12. That way I can finish the game and don't have to worry about doing less renders than I might want to or whatever.

Here's a freebie promo for everyone...

I put this in the render queue last night, but it's a promo render not a game render. Enjoy!
Sexiest girl in game BY FAR

I don't know who I find sexiest, it is so difficult to choose! But I do know that Lydia and MC feels like the perfect couple for me. I can't imagine an ending where they are not together.
Better be good to her then! :) I'm too easy on you guys with point gaps, but that's mostly intended. I think making them too narrow is never a good thing. That's the kinda stuff I mod out! :p

You do make an excellent walkthrough so I've got that covered. :)

Dev Update #37 (Progress)

Wonder what Mary is doing downtown...

Ok guys we are currently at a whopping 1993 renders, 12 animations and over 6000 lines of code. That's with four scenes still left in the second day of the update!

I said I was gonna go all out with this one, and that's what I'm doing. Of the four scenes left, one is going to be very big, and the others will still be good size scenes. The end of the first day of the update took me a week and a half, just on those two sex scenes. But, I think you're gonna like them, and I feel it was worth it.

Still looking like the update will release in the first half of June. I'd like to release it on the 8th, because if I can make it to that day without picking up a drug or a drink, I'll have 14 years sober. I thought it would be kinda cool to have the patron a release on my sobriety date. But, there are still a lot of factors involved in making that happened.

1) I gotta stay sober, we never count days before they happened in the program because it really is just 24hrs at a time. "The bars are still open and the dope men are still out on the corners". Source: Any sponsor worth a damn.

2) I've gotta get this finished and polished by then, and I'm not gonna rush it if there are things that need cleaned up or I wanna go back and tweak.

3) I have to give Shaddy time to work his magic on the proofing once I am done.

This will likely be the last dev update before release, I don't really see a reason for another one, unless we were to run into problems or something.

As always, hope you are all doing well, cheers!

One of these last few scenes I'm writing has me on the verge of tears. It's not a personal experience of mine, but something the MC has been dealing with for a while that he's coming to terms with.

I understand it probably won't hit everyone the same, but just writing it is making me emotional. I hope that's a good sign. I've got this way a few other times in the course of development, but this one is right up there with the toughest scenes to write in terms of what I have to give to it as an author.

Not sure why I shared that, guess it felt better out than in.
