The text clearly hints at Alison changing clothes and hair is mainly to keep up with the "competition", real and imagined. Even if Ian and her decide to keep experimenting, Alison is not pushing forward with all her might, rather the contrary. She states paraphrased that it is interesting to experiment, but she does not need more of it. They can do it or not, she is okay with either.
