Did it happen without a traceback log generated in the game folder?
If it is like this, I think it happened to a while back, with almost every renpy game in my pc, game crashes and no auto-save was saved, sucks.

Sometimes you have to add renpy executables to your anti-virus exclusions list, or what it's called. The revised version of last chapter had an issue with my anti-virus.

Pretty sure there is no difference gameplay wise. Like in GGGB it's all cosmetic.
