It's a marketing tool to encourage discussion. Forcing the player to explore the game increases the likehood of them participating publicy, which consequently makes them and the community they have to engage more involved in the game. Eva isn't giving us saves, walktroughs and an unlocked gallery, they want the players to gather them on their own.I never understood the idea of having a gallery without an "unlock all" button.

Lesson #10: Leave room for the player to explore
People are more invested in things that they initiated, get them to ask questions
Don’t always show the player the things you want them to see, let the player find them
