Authors are like movie stars, the really big names can make mega bucks, but mostly they just struggle by, being popular (for the most part) just means that you can do it full time.
Given that Holly (at least initially) isn't into partying, and lives with her parents, she probably has a decent amount of cash, but not crazy amounts.
