You would be saying the same thing about anyone of the male cast if you knew their storyline was scrapped early on. It's a lot less about the fanbase loving Ed and more about the feeling of "what could've been".
Me personally I think the most pointless/poorly developed male LI is Robert, scrap him from the story and very little would change. Would Ed have played a bigger role? Who knows, but it certainly would've been more interesting than Robert's. If nothing else, at least from a corruption point of view.

This is how I feel about Ian. EK could have had the main character be an aspiring club promoter, or aspiring photographer, or aspiring DJ, or someone starting a modeling agency... but nope... we have Ian.

Ian is better than Robert, but seriously, the opportunity EK had to make the main player fantastically more interesting was severely missed.

No, Robert was used to enable Lena to have early sexual content. It is a porn game with respective expecations of their audience. Without Robert, Lena wouldn't fuck until... Mike? Ian? Quite late. Hence Lena and Ian can already fuck in chapter 2. Alison and Cherry share this with Robert.

He sort of blackmails Lena by having her only keep her job if she dates him, since he recommends who stays.
He is overly pushy and drops out if Lena doesn't sleep with him at the second date at latest.
He is unpleasant to her friend Ian and would fight him in her presence despite her vehement protest.
He is in general whiny and demanding.

Robert was supposed to be nothing more than the drunk guy Ian beats in Chapter 1, but Eva Kiss needed an early fuck for Lena, so she expanded his role to being Lena's co-worker, and it ballooned from there. The funny thing is that she even gave him a soft rewrite a few years ago to make him likable because his OG version used to be more pushy and unpleasant. He got something like 20 votes out of 1500+ in the first male NPC popularity poll she did on Patreon after his rework.

But alison could also be a good actor

His character sprite are goofy. Also, this guy is a very realistic character. Everyone has met a guy like him at work/study. And that's not a good thing. Because the main association with such people is annoyance.
