I mean perhaps that's AI, but that's a common thing to do in visual novels like this. Have a pose with a blank face and then impose the expressions on top of it. It's a huge time save to draw a single pose without any facial details and five faces to place on that blank rather than five poses with a different face each. If the coding gets swapped is when you see errors like that because it's drawing the wrong expression to the wrong place.
